The end result made for one of the most unique Spider-Man games published under Activision's Marvel tenure, a feat made more noteworthy by the fact it predated Marvel's own Spider-Verse comics by several years. The Spider-Man of Marvel's 2099 reality focused on platforming and aerial combat in vibrant Nueva York, while those inspired by Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley's Ultimate Spider-Man comics took on an almost hack-and-slash bent, with Peter wielding the Venom symbiote against Carnage and - in one level - an oil rig taken over by Deadpool. Each different Spider-Man had their own gameplay style and presentation the levels based on the Amazing comics featured cel-shading and traditional action-adventure gameplay, whereas the Noir levels were much more stealth focused, and rendered in sepia tones. It may have lacked the polish or graphical detail of Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum, but it more than made up for that in gameplay variety and diversity in presentation. Christopher Daniel Barnes - who voiced Spider-Man in Fox's iconic '90s cartoon - played Spider-Man Noir, with Neil Patrick Harris voicing Earth-616 Peter, Josh Keaton as the symbiote-clad Ultimate Spidey, and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends star Dan Gilvezan playing Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099.
Brought together by Madame Web, Shattered Dimensions also saw iconic Spidey voice actors from the wall-crawler's different animated shows return to voice each incarnation.
Released in 2010, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions revolved around four different Spider-Men fighting across multiple dimensions to put a stop to Mysterio, who had shattered a powerful mystical tablet at the start of the story. Shattered Dimensions actually predated the original Spider-Verse comic from 2014 as well, making it somewhat ahead of its time.
Unlike other Spider-Man games, which have mostly been open-world since the release of 2004's Spider-Man 2, Shattered Dimensions returned to a linear format and brought four different incarnations of the wall-crawler together, taken from the pages of Spider-Man 2099, Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, and Ultimate Spider-Man respectively. The wait for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse might now be longer than anticipated, with Sony recently announcing that the sequel has been delayed to 2023, but playing Beenox's underrated Spider-Man: Shattered Dimension s may help in the meantime.
